An old slow individual who only a couple of years ago realized how fantastic running is.
LAKBO. Is a short cut for Lakad-Takbo. I wonder if this is a popular running term or not? My co-worker upon hearing that I am joining my first 5K (New Balance, if my memory serves me right) at the Fort, gave me this tip. If I still cannot run the whole 5 kilometers, just “lakbo”. Which I did and I finished with an unforgettable time. Sub 1-hour I think! HA!
So lakbo has been my mantra every race I join or whenever I jog around the Fort or Manila Memorial. Yes, the cemetery is highly recommended for runs. It is asphalted, no traffic and of course, very quiet.
Currently I am happy to have progressed from lakbo to a jogging/running pace. I still have no plans to hire a coach because for now, my races are for recreational purposes. My short-term goal for the remainder of the year is to finish two races: a half-marathon and a sprint triathlon.
I might not be able to qualify for Boston in this lifetime but I will make sure someday I’m gonna stand on Boylston Street and watch in awe the greatest runners on earth.
hi! its really nice to come across pinays who are also into running! i saw your photos, and gosh! i envy you doing your running everywhere! i just started lakbo (ha ha on this! for us bisaya, that would be lakgan or lakaw (walk) dagan (run)) and i am now addicted. i do my thing every morning for an hour of 5-6 mile run (nike+ rules!). running has made me finally quit smoking and i feel healthier than ever. next sun is my 1st 5k (yep milo). so sorry to hear that you didnt get to run here in cebu. just holler next time and i can be your slowpoke buddy. cheers and keep on running.
Hi Abby! Wow I have a new running mate in Cebu na! Also, great to hear you quit smoking and have decided to live a healthier lifestyle.
Good luck on your first 5K! I’m sure it will be memorable. And I guarantee that you’ll be signing up for all the future races. Ka-addict talaga!

hi! came across your blog and found it interesting
i like your term “lakbo”
that’s exactly what i’ve been doing
(i’ll add your blog to my blogroll, if you don’t mind
) i just started running april 19, 2009, to be exact. i was nahila to run in the greenfield 5K…with no prior runs, whatsoever…it almost killed me
i walked-ran the 5K for about 56 something minutes…and i was super exhausted…however, i got hooked!
the ie8 last sunday was my second race, joined the 4 miles, finished round 57 minutes
better than my 5K, at least
i can’t really run for a long time coz of my exercise-induced asthma, but i’m really trying to improve my endurance by running…walking
it’s great to know other lakbo-ers
i hope i can see and meet you in future runs
i’ll be doing the ptaa run on june 14. hope to see you and other lakbo-ers there!
